Between ICT, Heritage and the Tourist: What about the Host Community

In recent years, substantial amounts of research and development have been put into the implementation and use of ICT in museums and heritage sites.  The introduction of ICT has two main purposes: to improve and enrich tourists’ experiences and to trace their behavior for planning, marketing and development purposes.  Much less attention has been given to the role of ICT in transforming heritage sites and museums to include facilities to enhance cultural preservation and revival, to engage host communities in cultural experiences and to enable host communities to benefit from cultural tourism.   The presentation will identify the characteristics of the cultural and economic exclusion of host communities as the use of ICT in museums and heritage sites grows. It will also discuss the global pressure to introduce ICT into tourism regardless of the l capacity of the local level to assimilate and make proper use of this technology.   Finally, it will propose ways on how to use ICT as a promoter of "inclusive museums" and heritage sites; this should not only enhance visitors’ experiences but also create cultural and socio-economic benefits to the host communities.
